Every hurricane is different, but we will forever remember Hurricane Ida and the trail of destruction she left. Our flood defense barriers protected dozens of homes and businesses over the largest geographical range for a single storm that we have ever experienced. The entire variety of our product line and unique attributes were in play within the approximate 1,500-mile swath of destruction she left.
Louisiana is one of the most prepared states in the USA when it comes to flood defense and Hurricane Ida dealt a crippling blow. Our flood barriers deployed start with the Defencell product used along coastal areas to stop coastal erosion. If you are need to find a simple and effective solution when evaluating how to stop beach erosion, this is a fantastic option.
Moving inland, the storm surge came in and pushed the rivers and bayous out of their banks which is where the big flooding happens. Protecting against storm surge is one of the biggest threats we deal with due to the flood depth and violent water associated with this type of flooding. For this, we had multiple locations set up with HESCO Barriers to protect oil & gas facilities from flooding as well as individual parish (county) deployments.
Flood Defense Group regularly protects large facilities and entire communities from flooding, but it is residential flood protection and the need to protect a house from flooding that creates our highest demand immediately prior to a hurricane. For this, we were able to draw from our stockpile of flood barriers in Louisiana. If you are looking at where to purchase flood barriers in Louisiana or Texas, we have a variety of flood barriers for purchase in Texas and Louisiana.
When it comes to residential flood protection in Louisiana for Hurricane Ida, we deployed a significant amount of water tubes and the NOAQ Boxwall. These two products are among the most popular options to protect a home from flooding because they are simple to deploy and easy to store.
NOTE: Because I put the words ‘Water Tube’ and ‘Louisiana’ in the same sentence, I must clarify that we do not suggest deploying the Water Filled Flood Tube (or ‘water diversion tube’) in flood water with wave action. They tend to move and allow more under-seepage than we like. We find that the ‘sweet spot’ when it comes to using water filled flood tubes is when you are fighting floodwater of about 14” or less. Once we look at stopping more than 14” of floodwater, we feel there are alternate options that are easier to work with and less prone to catastrophic problems associated with hurricane conditions.
Pushing the Mississippi into reverse as Hurricane Ida moved north, she passed 2 different 8’ floodwalls we built for Mississippi River flood protection and into Tennessee who had not fully dried out from last months record flooding. We had multiple homeowners purchase flood barriers in Tennessee for recent flooding that never thought they would have to deploy their flood barriers twice in less than a month to floodproof a house but that is what happened.
As she continued north, we had customers purchase flood barriers in Kentucky, Virginia, and Maryland which were all deployed but the shock set in as she delivered a deluge of rain in Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey. It was a good thing we had flood barriers for sale in New Jersey and New York from our depot of flood defense barriers in New Jersey or we would not have been able to be responsive to regional flooding there.
The flooding in the northeast of the USA was where surprise about the veracity of Hurricane Ida turned into absolute shock with the rain totals experienced. Within this area we also had a variety of flood barriers deployed which was predominately the NOAQ Boxwall and the Muscle Wall products. These two products are great within an urban environment because they are clean and easy to work with and provide great flood protection without the mess and logistical nightmare associated with installing soil filled barriers. (Especially immediately prior to a big weather event
The Muscle Wall product offers the tallest protective option on the market when it comes to a completely reusable, temporary flood barrier that does not require modifications to your house or the ground. You simply fill it with water and move it when you are done. This product can quickly achieve 2’, 3’, 4’, 6’, or 8’ in height of flood protection and is a robust product against wave impact, debris impact from the water or flying debris, and violent water. Most other temporary flood defense barriers on the market are not taller than 3’ or 1 meter. This makes Muscle Wall our go-to solution in stopping dangerous floodwater at depths beyond most other flood barriers on the market.
The NOAQ Boxwall on the other hand, is our most widely used flood barrier to protect homes from flooding. It can be used to stop slow rising floodwater or to stop flash flooding to the full height of the barrier. This is because it is easily deployed by a single person without the need for any sort of fill material like soil or water and allows you to immediately divert floodwaters or create a floodwall around most houses in under an hour. When the flood passes, this flood barrier stacks away like a bunch of chairs for the next use.
Finally, there were numerous flood barriers deployed to protect doors from flooding. We call these ‘panels and planks’ which is well described as flood panel systems that fit into, or over, a doorway to prevent flooding. We find that a significant amount of this flooding is associated with standing water on the roadways that lap into a house and through the door every time a car drives by. This could drive a person nuts but there are a lot of solutions to prevent flooding in a doorway or to protect a garage from flooding. Our systems include the Floodgate by Quickdams or Dam Easy flood barriers which wedge themselves into a doorway. We also have panel systems like FRA Panel or the Legacy Flood Panel for doors and windows that are fixed to a structure which make them FEMA compliant flood barriers. These are all different ‘panels & planks’ type options that quickly seal a door from flooding.
